GS1 Logistics Standard
SSCC Barcode Formatting Guide
The "license plate" of the supply chain. Learn to create unique 18-digit identifiers for every logistics unit in your network.
What is an SSCC?
The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is the GS1 standard for identifying individual logistics units, such as pallets, cases, or containers. Unlike a GTIN which identifies a product type, the SSCC identifies a specific unique unit of transport.
The 18-Digit Structure
The SSCC is always exactly 18 digits long and is identified by the Application Identifier (00).
- Extension Digit: 1 digit (0-9) used to increase the serial capacity.
- GS1 Company Prefix: The unique ID assigned to your business by GS1.
- Serial Reference: A unique serial number for that specific pallet or box.
- Check Digit: The final digit, calculated using the GS1 Modulo 10 algorithm.
Integration with ASN
The primary purpose of the SSCC is to act as a look-up key in your Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system. When a pallet is scanned, the SSCC links to the Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) which contains the full details of the products inside.

Pallet Labeling
GS1 standards recommend placing SSCC labels on at least two sides of a pallet to ensure visibility for forklift drivers and automated conveyor scanners.
