Understanding Data Matrix Barcodes
Industrial density. Learn how this square matrix identifies everything from microchips to medical implants using 2D scannability.
Compact Industrial Power
Data Matrix is a 2D matrix symbology consisting of black and white "modules" arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern. It is the industry standard for Direct Part Marking (DPM) because it can store information in an extremely small physical footprint.
The Finder Pattern
Unlike QR codes, a Data Matrix code is identified by a solid "L" shape on two of its sides. This allows scanners to determine the code's orientation even on circular surfaces or in low-contrast conditions.
ECC 200: Error Correction
Modern Data Matrix codes use the ECC 200 standard, which employs Reed-Solomon error correction. This advanced logic allows the barcode to be read even if 30% of its surface is damaged or obscured, providing extreme reliability for manufacturing environments.
