The Author's Guide to ISBN Barcodes

From manuscript to market. Master the ISBN-13 standard required for bookstores, libraries, and global inventory tracking.

What is an ISBN?

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a numeric identification key intended to be unique across all book formats and editions. Since January 2007, ISBNs are exactly 13 digits long and are derived from the EAN-13 retail standard.

The 5-Part Anatomy

An ISBN-13 barcode is constructed using five distinct elements:

  1. GS1 Element: Always 978 or 979 (known as the "Bookland" prefix).
  2. Group Identifier: Identifies the country, language area, or region.
  3. Publisher Element: Identifies the specific imprint or publisher.
  4. Title Element: Identifies the specific edition and format of the book.
  5. Check Digit: The final digit, calculated using the standard EAN-13 Modulo 10 algorithm.

Printing Requirements

For bookstore compliance, the barcode must be printed on the lower right-hand corner of the back cover. The human-readable ISBN (hyphenated) must be printed above the barcode symbol.
