The HIBC (Health Industry Barcode) Guide
Alphanumeric precision for patient safety. Learn why clinical environments favor HIBC for marking surgical tools and implantable hardware.
What is HIBC?
The Health Industry Barcode (HIBC) was developed by the Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC) to provide a robust alphanumeric standard specifically for healthcare providers and manufacturers. Unlike GS1, HIBC supports the use of original catalog numbers without conversion to numeric-only GTINs.
Structure: The + Prefix
A compliant HIBC string is instantly identified by its mandatory "+" prefix. This character instructs scanners to interpret the data according to HIBCC rules.
- Primary Data Structure: Contains the "+" symbol, the LIC (Labeler Identification Code), the product identifier, and a unit of measure digit.
- Secondary Data Structure: Contains manufacturing variables such as lot/batch number, serial number, and expiration date.
Why Choose HIBC?
HIBC is favored for its alphanumeric flexibility. It allows clinical staff to see their internal part numbers (e.g., "SURG-ST-001") directly in the barcode, reducing the chance of manual data entry errors during high-stress clinical procedures.
