What is Barcode Lookup?

A barcode lookup (or barcode checker) is the process of scanning or typing the numbers beneath a barcode into a database to retrieve the associated product information.

It is a common misconception that barcodes inherently contain product names, prices, or descriptions. They do not. A standard retail barcode is simply a unique string of numbers (like a license plate). To know what the "license plate" belongs to, you must look it up in a database.

How Barcode Databases Work

When a company creates a product intended for retail sale, they purchase a block of unique barcode numbers from GS1 (the global barcode standards organization). GS1 maintains the central registry of all authentic retail barcodes in the world.

When you use a barcode lookup tool, the software is cross-referencing your barcode number against GS1's registry or a crowdsourced product database to find:

  • The Product Name
  • The Manufacturer or Brand Owner
  • Product Category
  • Occasionally, pricing data (if the database aggregates retailer information)

Types of Barcodes You Can Look Up

Not all barcodes can be looked up globally. You can only perform a global lookup on standardized retail barcodes. Internal logistics barcodes will not return results on public databases.
